What should have been a routine travel day at Murtala Muhammed International Airport quickly turned chaotic as a sudden fire outbreak forced hundreds to flee for safety.
Panic erupted on Wednesday at Murtala Muhammed International Airport after a fire broke out at the airport’s temporary terminal building, prompting the immediate evacuation of passengers, airline crew, and staff.
Eyewitnesses reported that the terminal was suddenly filled with thick smoke, sparking confusion and fear among travelers who rushed to exit the building.
“The temporary terminal just caught fire. The whole place was covered in smoke. Everyone—passengers, crew, and staff—had to be evacuated immediately,” a source at the airport revealed.
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after an Ethiopian Airlines flight completed boarding and departed.
Emergency response teams acted swiftly, activating safety protocols to secure the area and prevent casualties. Firefighters from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria are currently working to bring the situation under control.
“There was panic initially, but evacuation was handled quickly. Security officials are doing their best to manage the situation,” another witness said.
As of the time of this report, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and there are no confirmed reports of injuries or casualties.
This incident comes just weeks after a similar fire outbreak disrupted operations at the airport, raising fresh concerns about safety and infrastructure at one of Nigeria’s busiest aviation hubs.
